Advances in infrared and imaging fibres for astronomical instrumentation

چکیده
Optical fibres have already played a huge part in ground based astronomical instrumentation, however, with the revolution in photonics currently taking place new fibre technologies and integrated optical devices are likely to have a profound impact on the way we manipulate light in the future. The Anglo Australian Observatory, along with partners at the Optical Fibre Technology Centre of the University of Sydney, is investigating some of the developing technologies as part of our Astrophotonics programme. In this paper we discuss the advances that have been made with infrared transmitting fibre, both conventional and microstructured, in particular those based on fluoride glasses. Fluoride glasses have a particularly wide transparent region from the UV through to around 7μm, whereas silica fibres, commonly used in astronomy, only transmit out to about 2μm. We discuss the impact of advances in fibre manufacture that have greatly improved the optical, chemical resistance and physical properties of the fluoride fibres. We also present some encouraging initial test results for a modern imaging fibre bundle and imaging fibre taper.

Characterisation of cooled infrared fibres for the Gemini IRMOS
Recently integral field spectroscopy has become a band-wagon among the optical astronomical community and most of the 8m class telescopes plan to offer this as part of their instrumentation package. The possibility of expanding integral field spectroscopy into the near infrared (1-2.5μm) opens exciting new possibilities for the study of a variety of astronomical objects. In this paper, we discu...
متن کاملRecent advances in diffuse optical imaging.
We review the current state-of-the-art of diffuse optical imaging, which is an emerging technique for functional imaging of biological tissue. It involves generating images using measurements of visible or near-infrared light scattered across large (greater than several centimetres) thicknesses of tissue. We discuss recent advances in experimental methods and instrumentation, and examine new th...

Astrophotonics lies at the interface of astronomy and photonics. This burgeoning field has emerged over the past decade in response to the increasing demands of astronomical instrumentation. Early successes include: (i) planar waveguides to combine signals from widely spaced telescopes in stellar interferometry; (ii) frequency combs for ultra-high precision spectroscopy to detect planets around...
متن کاملA Thermal Infrared Heterodyne Receiver with Applications to Astronomy
A method for detection of thermal infrared radiation from astronomical sources is discussed from an instrumentation point of view. This method utilizes heterodyne detection, whereby light collected by a telescope is spatially mixed with single-mode radiation from an infrared laser local oscillator onto a HgCdTe photodiode. The operating wavelength range of the receiver is adjustable from approx...

Wide-field survey instruments are used to efficiently observe large regions of the sky. To achieve the necessary field of view, and to provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio for faint sources, many modern instruments are undersampled. However, precision photometry with undersampled imagers requires a detailed understanding of the sensitivity variations on a scale much smaller than a pixel. To a...
